What are the Caldecott and Newbery awards? The Caldecott Medal, named after the 19th-century English illustrator Randolph Caldecott, is awarded to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children. The Newbery Medal was named for the 18th-century British bookseller John Newbery. It is awarded to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American children's literature.
