ILL Frequently Asked Questions

  What is not available through Interlibrary Loan?

Who is eligible for Interlibrary Loan Services?

  • Patrons who have a valid library card (in good standing with no fines, lost books, etc.)
  • Patrons from other libraries who want to borrow Laredo Public Library materials may do so through their local public libraries or they may use their Texshare Card

How do I request materials?

  • Requests may be submitted in person at the Main Library or at any Branch Library.
  • Requests may also be submitted online or by telephone by calling the Main Library at (956) 795-2400, the Santo Nino Library at (956) 795-2420 or the Bruni Plaza Branch Library at (956) 795-3039.

How long may I keep materials obtained through interlibrary loan?

  •  The length of the loan is determined by the due date set by the lending library.  Customers are notified by mail or by phone when the material arrives.
  • Renewals must be requested 3 days before the due date

What will it cost?

  • There is usually no charge for the Interlibrary Loan Service.
  • If a lending library charges for the requested loan or photocopy, Interlibrary Loan staff will contact the customer to authorize the charge before agreeing to the loan.  The customer must pay these charges when picking up the material.

How long will I have to wait for an item?

  • The normal processing time for an Interlibrary Loan request is approximately two to four weeks (Materials are borrowed from libraries in Texas, the United States, Canada, and other countries)
  • If no library will loan the material, Interlibrary Loan staff will notify the customer by mail or by telephone.

What happens if I lose or damage an item?

  • The lending library will request that you pay for the damage or loss of the item and may also charge a processing fee.

Where do I return materials?

  • Materials must be returned to the Main Library or any Branch Library
  • Materials may not be returned in book drops
  • Paperwork sent with the item must be returned with the item as directed
  • Photocopies do not have to be returned
