The Laredo Public Library is looking for a few good Friends ... You’ve got to have Friends. 
A Friend in need is a Friend in deed …

The Friends of the Laredo Public Library Friend of the Library was first organized in 1979.  The Friends of the Library, Laredo, Texas (FOL) is a support group for the Laredo Public Library.  The membership consists of concerned volunteers who are committed to supporting, promoting, improving and expanding Library Services.  FOL accepts donations and conducts fund-raisers in order to provide financial support for special projects to enhance library service, augment the library’s book collection and elevate the community’s awareness of the educational opportunities available at the Public Library.

FOL was instrumental in the building of the Main Library building in 1998, but has since become inactive.  The Library and a group of interested citizens are seeking to resurrect and revitalize the FOL. The Friends group is seeking members to help continue the good work that they have done in the past. The goal of membership and main purposes of the group are the following:

1. To undertake activities that benefits the library in its mission of getting more people to read.
2. To raise funds for operations and extras, for building and programs.
3. To provide for and fund special programs.
4. To organize volunteer services for the library.
5. To solicit gifts, endowments and memorials.
6. To work for good public relations for the library through contacts with groups and individuals.
7. To stay in close contacts with the business community on behalf of the library.
8. To assist in lobbying efforts at state, national and local levels.
9. To stay in close contact with the schools on behalf of the library.
10. To assist the library board with its activities.

The Library just completed its first ever long range plan. Focus groups and telephone surveys were used to solicit input from the citizens on the library needs of the community.  Results show a need for a Friends group to help the library meet the goals of this plan.

An organizational meeting will be held June 11, 2008 at the Laredo Public Library, Multi purpose Room at 6:00 p.m. Refreshments will be served.
